Southern California Architect Erik Evens is also a teacher, mentor and an author of a new book titled Shaping the World as a Home: The Houses and Gardens of Erik Evens, published by Rizzoli. He is a fellow of the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art who serves on their national curriculum committee and a founding member of ICAA's SoCal chapter.

Erik tells us, "we are hard wired to perceive certain proportion and geometries as beautiful. It is right in front of us when we look deeply at nature." Of all the precepts in Mr. .Evens traditional design philosophy, "beauty" is the most important. " Classicism is a steadfast path to creating beauty. It is an antidote to the chaos in our lives." In other words, our culture might change but our love of beauty does not.

Mr. Even's interest, education and ultimate career in architecture began with his love of drawing and his passion for craft. An undergraduate class in Art History at UCLA motivated him to transfer to an undergraduate program in architecture at Cal Poly. Today he leads KAA Group which blends a classical vernacular design practice with landscape design, both of which are beautifully illustrated in his new book.

Listen in as Erik Evens talks about "Place, Proportion, Nature, Tradition, Timelessness, Beauty and how these precepts guide his design work.
