Building Tradition Episode 19: Interview with Michael Campbell
Mike Campbell owns and leads Winchester, Inc., a custom home and renovation contractor in the mid-Atlantic region of Maryland and DC.
Established in 1980 Winchester has completed over 500 projects ranging from rustic retreats to country estates, historic homes, and major renovations.
There is artistry in their work with close attention to detail and craft. They collaborate with architects and interior designers on most projects and on their own team employ carpenters, masons, painters, excavators and project managers.
Period homes builder and historic renovation specialist Mike Campbell of Winchester Company thinks craftsmanship is alive and well with the next generation of skilled trades people. He knows how to find, evaluate and train them to pursue a career with his company.
This might seem contrary to popular opinion that craftsmanship is “dead“ but it is every bit in evidence when you see the quality of craftsmanship in Winchesters work. “We spend the time it takes to train our craftspeople,” explains Campbell. “It takes time but in our company people can start in the field and work their way up to supervisors if they are willing to learn and to embrace our values.”
Winchester collaborates closely with architects. “If we are involved early in the design process with our architect partners we add more value.”
Listen in as Winchester’s owner and president Mike Campbell discusses the importance of using high quality materials, building timeless homes and managing complex historic renovations.
